The Multilateral Dialog of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Vienna, together with Atomic Reporter, invites you to an online discussion about the JCPOA. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran nuclear deal, has reached a crucial moment. “Proximity talks” are currently going on in Vienna between Iran and the United States through the European Union delegation acting as an intermediary. These talks aim to find a pathway to restore the return of both to the July 2015 JCPOA, following the withdrawal from the agreement in May 2018 by the-then Trump administration and in June 2019 by Iran. The Biden administration and Iran have indicated their willingness to return to the JCPOA implementation – but quite a number of obstacles remain. Three experts will discuss the way forward from the perspectives of the United States, the EU, and Iran.
Ilan Goldenberg, Director, the Middle East Security Programme, Centre for a New American Security, Washington DC, is a foreign and defence policy expert with extensive government experience covering Iran’s nuclear programme, including as a Senior Professional Staff Member on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee covering Middle East issues, and as a Special Advisor on the Middle East and as the Iran Team Chief in the Office of the US Under-Secretary of Defence for Policy.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, Senior Director, Counter Extremism Project (CEP) in New York and Berlin, serves as the Co-Chair of the Advisory Board of the Global Diplomatic Forum (GDF) in London. He has served as Team Coordinator of the ISIL (Da’esh), al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Monitoring Team of the United Nations Security Council, and as First Secretary for Political Affairs to the security forces at the German Embassy in Tehran as well as Special Advisor to the Ambassador.
Kelsey Davenport, Director for Non-proliferation Policy, Arms Control Association in Washington D.C., is focusing on the nuclear and missile programmes in Iran, North Korea, India, and Pakistan and reporting on these areas for Arms Control Today. She is the lead author of the P4+1 and Iran Nuclear Deal Alert newsletter, which assesses developments related to the 2015 JCPOA with Iran, and the North Korea Denuclearization Digest that tracks efforts to negotiate with North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme.
The event will be moderated by Tariq Rauf, Atomic Reporters Board Member and former Head of Verification & Security Policy Coordination at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
